As whiter teeth have become more popular, the cost of teeth whitening in Australia has come down tremendously in recent years. At Top health Dental we make use of the pola whitening system, offering the take-home treatment as well as the in-chair whitening.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
White, bright teeth are considered a hallmark of youth because as we get older the dentin in our teeth starts to discolour, causing the teeth to become more yellow. While this discolouration might be enhanced by the use of tobacco products and drinking beverages like cola and red wine, the discolouration can only be eliminated by accessing the dentin of your teeth.
Whitening With Pola
Teeth bleaching gels contain an active ingredient like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When the gel is applied to the surface of the teeth, it is broken down into oxygen and water molecules. The oxygen ions can penetrate the tooth enamel and break up the molecules that are causing the staining, shortening them and making them colourless.
Pola whitening treatments are available in different strengths, and are classified according to the amount of hydrogen peroxide they contain. If you are going to try a take-home treatment you can expect a strength of between 10 and 25%. If you opt for in-chair whitening, your dentist can apply a bleaching gel of up to 37.5% hydrogen peroxide.
What Can You Expect From The Whitening Process?
Before you begin any kind of whitening treatment you should have a dental inspection so that your dentist can evaluate the state of your tooth enamel and check your mouth for any cavities or decay.
After this consultation, your dentist will show you the pola shade guide so that you can find the tooth colour that appeals to you. Based on your desired shade of white, the time you have available and your budget, your dentist will recommend an in-chair or take-home treatment.
What Is The Cost Of Teeth Whitening?
The cost of teeth whitening depends on the method you choose as is revealed by the results of the National Dental Fee Survey that was conducted in 2017. According to that survey, in-chair whitening averages around $260 per tooth while a take-home kit for the same period averaged $610. Professional dental cleaning and plaque removal costs in the region of $280.
Over-the counter products feature in a much lower price range and their perceived affordability makes them very attractive. Remember however that whitening strips, gels and toothpastes do not contain high enough levels of hydrogen peroxide (if at all), and so can only get to work on surface stains.
If you do regular dental cleaning, then these surface marks can probably be removed by your dentist.
At Top Health Dental, we want everyone to feel confident in their smile, and we are committed to offering affordable and safe teeth whitening.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Take?
If you use take-home whitening, you can whiten your teeth in as little as 30 minutes a day. You may need to use the whitening treatment for a week to see your desired result. If you chose in-chair whitening, you will see results after a single 30-minute session, but you may want a second session to brighten your smile more.
In-chair whitening is ideal if you have limited time to achieve a brighter smile – if you have a special occasion to attend. If gradual whitening suits you, then the take-home trays will be able to achieve your desired results.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
The results of your whitening treatment will not last forever, and you may need a top up in a few months. Your dentist may recommend a take-home treatment for you to maintain your bright new smile for as long as possible.
Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?
Sometimes teeth whitening can cause tooth sensitivity however pola products are fortified with fluoride to protect against tooth sensitivity. Pola products have also been formulated as pH neutral to protect your soft tissue and gums.
